Did We Choose the Matrix?

Ever feel like life is playing out like a script you didn’t write? Like the choices you’re making—big or small—were somehow already decided? It’s not a new thought. Philosophers, spiritual seekers, and yes, even The Matrix movies, have danced with the idea that life might be a simulation. Not one to escape, but one to explore.

The Matrix posed a powerful question: what if the choices are already made? It’s a thought that sits uncomfortably next to the narrative we often hear—that life, as presented to us, is bad, unbearable, or even a mistake. But if that’s true, then why would our soul choose it? I find myself tangled in this contradiction, one that makes less and less sense the more I sit with it. And yet, what if we didn’t come here to fight those choices or rewrite the script? What if our purpose is simply to understand why we made them in the first place—to uncover the deeper truth hidden within them?

The Simulated Reality: A Playground for the Soul?

The idea of a simulation can feel unsettling. Nobody wants to think of themselves as a player in a preprogrammed game. Yet, at the same time, what if it’s not about limitation but liberation? What if this simulation, this “reality,” is a playground for the soul to experience, learn, and remember something profound?

It’s not about control. It’s about curiosity.

  • Why did I make this choice before I got here?
  • What am I meant to experience or learn through it?
  • What truth am I uncovering about myself?

Suddenly, life stops feeling like a trap and becomes a question worth answering. And here I am again—me and my endless questions, like it’s my full-time job or something. And the deeper I get, the more I have!

But let’s refocus:  If the script is written, we’re not stuck in it—we’re walking it for a reason. And before you say, “But what about free will?!,” I know, I’m with you. Let’s circle back to that after we unravel why this script exists in the first place. And maybe, just maybe, we’ll save the rest for another post so this one doesn’t turn into an epic saga that rivals The Matrix itself.

Choosing to Remember: It’s Not About Escape

The narrative of “escaping” the matrix is everywhere. Break free, unplug, wake up… you’ve heard it all before. It’s loud, persistent, and, quite frankly, terrifying when you start to notice how much of the online world paints this reality as something dark, suffocating, and unbearable. It’s as if simply existing here is a punishment we need to escape. But what if that’s not the full story? What if this place isn’t a prison but a stage we chose to stand on—not because it’s bad, but because it’s meaningful? What if waking up isn’t about running away from the simulation but waking up within it? Waking up to the fact that we chose to be here, in this life, at this time.

It changes everything. Suddenly, our struggles, our joys, and our mundane moments aren’t random. They’re part of why we came. And before we get caught up in this fear-filled narrative, let’s pause for a moment. Just stop. Stop everything. Close your eyes, take a breath, and forget everything you’ve learned or heard about this so-called “Matrix.” Open your eyes and look around. See the perfection of nature—the way the trees sway as if they’re dancing for you, the sky shifting colors like a living painting, or the sound of birds weaving melodies into your day.

And as you pause to look around, remember this: being human is part of the beauty too. Think about the warmth of shared laughter, the comfort of a kind gesture, or the way music can touch something deep within. Life offers us moments of pure joy—a child’s giggle, the taste of your favorite food, or the breathtaking colors of a sunset. Even in our struggles, there’s resilience, growth, and the magic of creating something from nothing. And above all, the sheer wonder that we exist, that we can ask these questions, and that we are connected to this vast, intricate web of life. Isn’t that miraculous?

Maybe you didn’t choose an easy script—many of us didn’t—but you chose it for a reason. And maybe the goal isn’t to break free, but to remember why you’re here in the first place.

The Choices We Make… and Remake

Life can feel like a loop sometimes, repeating itself in different ways until we finally see the lesson. It’s like the simulation is nudging us—not to win or finish, but to grow. And the choices we think we’re making now? Maybe they’re echoes of choices our soul made long before.

  • Why does this pattern keep showing up in my life?
  • What am I still resisting or avoiding?
  • How can I embrace the choices that are already mine to make?

It’s not about debating the choice. It’s about understanding it.

We Chose This

Whether or not life is a simulation doesn’t really matter. What matters is this: we’re here. You’re here. And maybe, just maybe, you chose this path not to escape it but to experience it fully.

What truth are you waking up to within this world you chose?  What question are you exploring that your soul already knows the answer to?

Maybe the journey isn’t about escaping the matrix. Maybe it’s about choosing to wake up within it. After all, isn’t understanding why we chose this life the ultimate awakening?
